Questions arise about efficacy of PRP

An article in the New York Times discusses issues surrounding the use of platelet rich plasma (PRP) as a treatment for a variety of injuries. Although PRP has been praised by some early users, several studies have called its effectiveness into question. In one study scheduled for publication in the British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM), researchers treating tennis elbow found whole blood just as effective as PRP at 3 months; at 6 months, the whole blood was more effective than PRP. In another study, also published in BJSM, PRP was found to be no more effective than placebo in the treatment of chronic Achilles tendinopathy.
